I'm letting the desktop lock itself automatically (after a period of 10 minutes of inactivty, mentioned in comment #2 2. I'm not entirely sure, it's hard to tell. I'd say the screen fails to automatically lock itself, but its being dimmed/darkened. It is possible that it's being locked then unlocked before entering my password, but there are cases where it locks successfully and appears locked when I wake it up.
