At least, application must report an error when allocating huge memory is not possible, not crashing. Also, we must check under Linux if the problem is also reproducible. Typically, no, because i'm sure that huge memory allocation is possible if ressource permit, else a fail back is provided properly. I do it in my office, in a real time acquisition application used in production (using 16b or ram in a circular buffer)...
