After messing around for a bit I discovered that commenting out this line:
<RegExpr attribute="Escape" context="BraceExpansion" String="\{(?=(\\[
\{\}]|[^\s\{\}]|\{(\\[ ]|\S)*\})+\})"
fixes this issue.
That line comes from a patch which fixes
