SUMMARY
In addition to what is described in the OP, the relative position of the
displays is not saved either. Upon restarting I have to move the displays
around again so that the one physically on the left shows the left part of the
virtual desktop.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
My setup consists of displays using different interfaces: one is HDMI the other
DP. HDMI is always selected automatically as the primary display following a
restart. I don't remember having this problem when I had two DP displays, but
this observation is not necessarily relevant.
