Error message and operating system used

SUMMARY
When I go to open the DigiKam application I get an error message: "Error while
opening the database. DigiKam will try to automatically reconnect to the
database". When I exit out of the message, DigiKam looks like it's loading to
open up but it never actually opens. I'm using macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I
downloaded DigiKam with the option"Download file from preferred mirror" on the
Mac download page. Advice I've found online is hard to follow for me... I'm
just using this software to tag images for a university course. Please help
