Nevermind, I just tried it on my wife's computer, I was able to reproduce the
issue.  It appears that the qt.conf file was accidentally deleted during the
build process so KStars cannot find the qml directory.  I changed the build
script to fix another issue and it seemed that KStars built and ran just fine,
but of course that was on my machine which is where it was built.  I will
correct it.
