well, after some more investigation, it seems I have been fooling myself, and
wasting your time (sorry :/).  So, originally, the i2c_hid driver had made
duplicates of my touchpad device making synclient not work properly, so I
blacklisted i2c_hid.  Afterwards, I tested synclient with "synclient
TouchpadOff=1" expecting the touchpad to be disabled (it wasn't) -- It didn't
occur to me to test the other settings.  But, changing the other settings via
synclient, with i2c_hid blacklisted, seem to work fine.  So, both synclient
(with the exception of TouchpadOff) and xinput seem to work.
