Sorry, but that would be wrong. Every file type is supported by a separate
plugin, so that needs to get a separate desktop file.
GTK people just should implement proper support for the freedesktop.org
standard
(https://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/latest/ar01s06.html),
notably the NoDisplay=true entry in these desktop files. This has been in the
standard for ages. I see from the discussion you linked that they don't want to
do that, but as far as I'm concerned they are wrong.
