I am posting a work-around/fix for the current version of korganizer shipped
with Ubuntu 18.10.
Ubuntu uses the Adwaita icon scheme as its default. This theme does not have
the icons needed by korganizer. I switched to the oxygen theme, and installed
the related packages via apt: sudo apt install oxygen-icon-theme install
oxygen-icon-theme-complete kde-style-oxygen. Now korganizer finds most of the
icons. (a restart might be required), and the buttom left part of the gui
appears alright
