Additionally, the new 'sidebar' mode has better usability when there is room for two columns plus the settings pages. I agree, though, that limiting the minimum size is not user friendly. It could pick the large size as a default, but allow the user to make it smaller, especially for those that use the 'icon view' mode, which does not need the full width.
