Something I missed earlier: your KBibTeX instance does not just crash because
it starts, but because it opens a file at startup (or tries at least).

Please locate and open in a text editor your kbibtexrc in your home directory
or underneath /tmp/usr (open both if both exist). There should be sections
starting with

[DocumentList-

The key-value pairs contain among others BibTeX filenames. If possible, send me
those .bib files for inspection.

You can remove the section [DocumentList-Open] if you want to remove all of
KBibTeX's knowledge on previously opened files. KBibTeX will start without
opening any files and should not crash.
Then try to open one of the BibTeX files that were previously in the
configuration files and see if KBibTeX then crashes again.
