Yes, i know that is not probably a solution for you and you really need to use
Ubuntu, but I really can't fix what actually already works and is either old
versions you're using or a misconfiguration on your side.
My suggestion would be that you install Arch Linux, verify it works and then
start looking at the different versions of poppler/freetype/something and
figure out what you need to update so it works for you too.
If when you install Arch Linux it doesn't work for you either, then we can
compare your package list/configuration with mine to see what may be causing
the issue.
