If there's a crash I need a crash report.
from the "dead" session can you open a konsole through krunner (alt+f2) and
start plasmashell there?
Hopefully that will bring up the drkonqi icon in the tray for the previously
crashed plasma.
Please reopen if you can't manage to get the trace saying what steps failed.
