Thanks for your idea. I agree the current behaviour is not an ideal user
experience, but I don't think it will work for the general case.

After you Export a screenshot, Spectacle is out of the loop. You'll have to use
"Save As" in whatever application you are opening the temporary file in and go
from there, or simply use the "Copy" function in that app. Spectacle's "Copy to
Clipboard" should always work on what's visible in Spectacle, and not change
its meaning to copy some temporary file.

That's not impossible to implement, but a slippery slope. For example GIMP by
default saves as XCF, and we'd have to tell the user to use "Export" or
otherwise this will fail. Such workflows work best for very specific apps, but
Spectacle only displays a generic list of apps it gets provided, e.g. it does
not know anything about GIMP. Again, best use the "Copy" menu entry in that
app.
