I've often wondered if the 'IMAP' connection to gmail goes away unexpectedly that it causes this problem - but have had no real way to prove this. Just leaving kmail open for a couple of hours with the auto-check for every 10-15 minutes is enough to cause the problem. It seems to get worse when using mail filters - as I have quite a few.
