I also miss this feature.

I know there is alt + up keyboard shortcut, but sometimes your hand is on a
mouse and it would be faster to just use it.

I often use back and forward (8 and 9) buttons on mouse that have such buttons
to workaround this, but it does not always work. It works only if you have
entered location via it's path. But when you just switched there, for example
using places panel, then pressing back button on mouse brings you to where you
was previously, but not level up.

It would be real improvement if implemented just double click at empty area to
go to parent directory.
