Sorry for not replying sooner...
Well, this looks like a bug in the older version, e.g. see bug #293229, so most
likely you had an old version and that's why it failed. Unfortunately both
Debian and hence Mint didn't package new versions of partition manager.
Without having administrative rights you can only view some stuff, you can't
edit partitions.
