Oddly the same technique actually works fine in the pattern editor when using the select tool - perhaps you can check that with yours. I noticed it also fails in other dialogs that display tooltips when dragging with the mouse. I am no closer to a solution at the moment, unless I just turn off the tooltips, but I do not really want to do that.
