Maybe related to bug#382504?
Apparently "Mute" for notification sounds doesn't have immediate effect for
already running applications (that includes plasmashell I suppose).
Changing the volume (to 0 e.g.) works fine here though (but there were problems
regarding this in plasma-pa y 5.11, see bug#383787)
