Realizing that I should update to 5.9.1 I saw that there was a bug in the qtwayland-5.9.0 ebuild which was fixed recently by kensington for the qtwayland-5.9.1 ebuild: https://github.com/gentoo/qt/commit/648d83e691da9a49cd4f76ade3c8466a377ac0b8 I.e. qtgui was not built with libinput support.
