I was using QT 5.9.0. Realizing that I should update to 5.9.1 I saw that there
was a bug in the qtwayland-5.9.0 ebuild which was fixed recently by kensington
for the qtwayland-5.9.1 ebuild:

I.e. qtgui was not built with libinput support.
So that should resolve the issue.
