What we do in kolourpaint is reading the MIME database (using Qt's
QMimeDatabase) and then we use QT's QFileDialog.

you mention Gnome. Do you run kolourpaint inside a Gnome session ?
If so, please attach a screenshot of the open-file-dialog.

It might be that Qt's platform plugin uses Gnomes file dialog, which would then
probably a problem with this part.
