Many of my use-cases, especially when using the filechooser in some applications are covered by this. But I still have to do both switches, to switch between detail-mode without preview (which is much faster) with the smallest possible icon size, and the thumbnails in icon mode. Use case: I prefer listing files in details mode without preview with smallest possible icon size (with that preview only slows down, and you can't see anything in that size).
