It is definitely unintuitive to search for a better audio output source. All in
all the complete audio toolchain seems gobbled up and you have to click through
different settings to find the correct source.
Somehow under gnome it works better. Even if you need a audio output source
extension to quickly change it, but even under settings a simple click works
and hotplug works often too. Can confirm this with a Thinkpad t520. But I have
to click audio profile HDMI 1 although I use displayport.
