To reply to your point about addons being able to update independent from
krita. 

I think that exporting as a sprite sheet is such a basic feature that it would
not need many extra features. and these features would most likely to be very
minor. So the need for it to be updated independently from krita is not really
needed as the people who want this extra functionality could use an addon if
they so please. 

The only extra features that i can think of are:
   automatic watermark/frame size
   split sprite exporting sheet based on layer

And these are minor and have quick work arounds 

I still think discarding Android users is a bit of a cop out. 
They already have it hard with animation as not having ffmpeg means they can't
export videos/gifs.

Exporting to a sprite sheet could give them the functionality to convert it to
a video via a web tool.
While this still could be done by exporting it as an image sequence this is
inferior because android devices tend to have primitive file systems Which tend
to not order them by name but by time.
This puts all of the frames in an odd order making it very tedious to use one
of these web tools.
