Bug ID: 521766
Summary: Plasma Wayland black screen after update —
eglInitialize fails + kwin_wayland segfault (NVIDIA
580xx, Dell G7 7588 PRIME)
Classification: I don't know
Product: kde
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
System info:
Hardware: Dell G7 7588 (Intel iGPU + NVIDIA dGPU, PRIME setup)
Kernel: linux-cachyos 7.0.12-1 (7.0.12-1-cachyos)
NVIDIA driver: nvidia-580xx-utils 580.159.04-2
KWin: 6.7.0-1.1
Mesa: 2:26.1.2-1
Display setup: laptop panel + external monitor via HDMI
Description:
After a recent system update, my Plasma Wayland session loads normally for a
few seconds — I see the desktop, wallpaper, and panel on both screens — then
both displays go black and the desktop reloads without the panel/taskbar and
with a black wallpaper. No menu or system tray is accessible afterward.
Switching to Plasma (X11) at the SDDM login screen works fine and fully
resolves the issue as a workaround.
Relevant log (journalctl -b -1):
kwin_wayland[958]: eglInitialize failed
kwin_wayland[958]: Error during eglInitialize "EGL_NOT_INITIALIZED"

plasma-plasmashell.service: Main process exited, code=exited,
status=255/EXCEPTION
This eglInitialize → segfault → plasmashell exit cycle repeats 3 times (systemd
restart counter increments each time) until systemd hits start-limit-hit, after
which plasmashell fails to start permanently within that session.
Later in the same boot, after switching back to X11 and rebooting, I also see:
kwin_wayland[2259]: atomic commit failed: Permissão negada
kwin_wayland[2259]: Applying output configuration failed!
kwin_wayland[2259]: PipeWire remote error: connection error
Workaround: Selecting "Plasma (X11)" at the SDDM login screen instead of
"Plasma (Wayland)" resolves the issue completely — desktop, panel, and
multi-monitor setup all work normally.
Question: Is this related to the recent NVIDIA 580xx/590xx driver restructuring
announcement? Happy to provide additional logs, nvidia-settings output, or test
proposed fixes.
