Currently, when the user closes a split view (via the toolbar button or F3),
Dolphin closes one of the two panes according to a setting that is buried. The
behavior has been a recurring complaint for many years (see bugs 312834,
186185, 464696, 493871, etc.). A one-time prompt would finally solve the
discoverability problem properly.
# Current situation
The default is found unintuitive by many new users. Some long time users don't
want to it to change as they have to adapt. The behaviour can be changed:
Configure Dolphin → Interface → Folders & Tabs → Split View → "When closing a
split view"
Most users might one day find this setting on their own or they don't (I did
not). As a result, many people are surprised/annoyed when closing the split
view closes the pane they were actively working in.
# Proposal
The first time a user closes a split view, show a clear, one-time dialog asking
how they want this to work from now on. Something like:
How should Dolphin behave when closing a split view? When you close a split
view, which pane should stay open?
Keep the active pane (close the other one) — recommended for most people
Keep the inactive pane (close the one I was working in)
Always close the right pane
[ ] Remember my choice and don't ask again
You can change this later in the Dolphin settings.
This way:
New users get a sensible experience without having to dig through settings.
Existing users who already have a preference set are not bothered.
We avoid the endless debate about what the "correct" default should be.
Bonus:
- maybe highlight the to be closed view with a cross icon (themability) on
hover so one does not have to inspect the icon in the toolbar? (hotkey users
don't use visual inspection)
- option to 'undo' the closing. This is basic HIG.
