Bug ID: 517150
Summary: Configured password for newly-formatted LUKS-encrypted
disk isn't accepted
Classification: Applications
Product: partitionmanager
Version First Git
Reported In:
Platform: KDE Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Keywords: regression
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
Using current git master of Partition Manager and kpmcore in KDE Linux, which
is Arch-based.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Plug in a disk (in this case, a brand new one that just arrived in the mail)
2. Open Partition Manager and authenticate
3. Select the disk in the sidebar
4. Click "New Partition Table" > "GPT" > "Create New Partition Table"
5. Click the unallocated space in the main view
6. Click "New"
7. Click "Encrypt with LUKS"
8. Set the password to "mud" (for ease of typing and making sure you aren't
mis-typing it)
9. Set the label to "Backup"
10. Set the permissions to "Everyone"
11. Click "OK"
12. Click "Apply" > "Apply Pending Operations" > "OK" when finished
OBSERVED RESULT
- The newly-formatted disk does not appear in Plasma's Disks & Devices popup.
- Right-clicking on the partition in Partition Manager unexpectedly shows a
"Lock" menu action
- Clicking the "Lock" menu item and then right-clicking and clicking on
"Unlock" asks for the password, which appears to be accepted, but nothing
visibly happens
- Unplugging and disk and plugging it in again makes it appear in Plasma's
Disks & Devices popup
- In there, clicking "Mount and Open" prompts for the password, but entering
"mud" fails. The widget says "Could not mount this device"
- Going back to Partition Manager, unlocking there now fails as well, yielding
an error message saying "The encrypted file system on partition ‘/dev/sdg1’
could not be unlocked."
EXPECTED RESULT
After the reformat, the disk immediately appears in Plasma's Disks & Devices
popup (which is what happens for a newly-formatted non-LUKS-encrypted disk).
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: KDE Linux 2026-03-04
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.80
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 6.18.13-zen1-1-zen (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840U w/ Radeon™ 780M Graphics
Memory: 17 GB of RAM (16.0 GB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M Graphics
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I know this worked in the past because I have two other backup disks I
formatted with LUKS encryption using Partition Manager. When I went to do the
same for a new one today, in the same manner I have done in the past, it failed
as described above.
