I could create a virtual screen recording with OBS Studio or Spectacle. The problem happened when I started Plasma by logging in from plasma-login-manager or sddm using just the internal laptop screen. No other screens were connected at the time. The desktop icons which were sorted by name became unsorted as Plasma started and before I would be able to create a virtual screen.
