So I hard disagree with this as it seems based on a fundamental misconception
there is no "plain text mode" it is always a rich text chat bar the only choice
is to show/hide the controls. Its really quick message mode vs long message
mode.

As far as the automatic markdown conversion goes it's designed to be a nice
feature for power users to be able to access the rich text formatting without
having to switch to mouse. In the long term I don't want to be in a place where
*bold* and bold - click the button to add a visual rich format live together as
that will be very inconsistent and very error prone for non power users.

I think we need to be careful that we don't drive design decisions toward our
own niche desires based on:
- Muscle memory - just because we've learnt to do things a certain way because
there wasn't anything better doesn't mean we should continue when different is
available - see https://xkcd.com/1172/
- Our power usage - knowing markdown and being able to work with it is niche

That being said the markdown upgrade is in it's infancy and the long term plan
is to be more like a proper block text editor where the markdown shows itself
when you move the cursor into a section.

I was also leaving it open to add a button to switch the auto markdown
formatting on/off in the rich text bar if it isn't fully ready by 26.04 which
at this point is most likely. This will technically give you what you ask for
in the short term but just note it's days are numbered as in the long term.
