            Bug ID: 516028
           Summary: UI and UX is confusing and not fluid
    Classification: Applications
           Product: Skanpage
      Version First 25.12.1
       Reported In:
          Platform: Fedora RPMs
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

SUMMARY
When using Skanpage, multiple steps are necessary to produce the minimal result
and multiple more are needed to scan multiple pages. I could report each
individual issue in a separate bug, but I'll try to create an overview ticket
first, and after some feedback I'll open separate ones if necessary.

If any of these are customizable then I'd recommend for different defaults.

CURRENT WORKFLOW

* open app
* scanner is selected automatically (or list is presented)
* Empty window is shown with "Show scanner options" sidebar active, but
toggle-able
* Click Preview button
    * New view is shown (still empty background), no indication of anything
happening
    * New toolbar is shown on the bottom, after we already have a toolbar at
the top
    * "Show Scanner Options" is toggled ON, but sidebar is not showing.
Clicking the toggle button does nothing
        * No option to switch preview scan settings
    * Scanner performs a preview scan
    * Preview scan is shown
    * Select (crop) desired area
        * Only manual, since I can't select A4 or any other standard size
anymore, for automatic sizing
* Use Scan button in toolbar on top to trigger a scan of the page, without the
possibility to tweak scan settings before
    * New view is shown
        * Loading animation with "Scanning in progress" text
        * Scanning happens
        * Sidebar for "Show Scanner Options" reappears and is toggle-able
        * Sidebar with the scanned pages appears
        * New Bottom toolbar appears with some edit page functions
        * "Scan" Button on top toolbar is not selected while in this view
            * clicking it again scans the same area again
* Clicking on "Preview" button in top toolbar keeps the button as "pressed" and
switches to preview view
    * Preview scan is shown
    * Previous selection lost
    * Scan options sidebar is gone again
    * Preview scan is not performed by scanner
        * Need to use button in bottom toolbar to trigger a new preview scan

MAIN ISSUES

* Preview and Scan buttons behave inconsistently: switch view or trigger action
* Confusing to look for buttons and menus on all 4 sides of the window
    * Sidebars make sense, but bottom toolbar should be at the top
* Scanner options missing in preview view
* Usual KDE edit toolbar buttons functionality is missing from ScanPage
entirely
* Triggering a new preview after a scan is not intuitively placed after 2
buttons and one view change
    * compared to Scan action triggered by a single button click from the
preview OR scan views

PROPOSAL

I'd rather let the HIG team take a look at the UX and UI, since they are better
at this than me, but here are my 2 cents, from experience with other
(proprietary) scanning apps:

* Preview and Scan views could be tabs, or the buttons to behave like tabs
* Second toolbar with actions specific to "Preview" or "Scan" to be shown
underneath the top toolbar, just like in most if not all other (KDE) apps
* "Preview" view to have prominent "Preview" and "Scan" buttons that will
trigger the actual actions on the scanner
* "Scan" view could be called something like "Edit" since the majority of
actions that can be performed from this view are to alter the already scanned
image
    * This view's toolbar should also have a prominent "Scan" or "Re-Scan"
button, to re-scan with the altered scan settings
* Or not have the "Preview" and "Scan" tabs at all, and have a single view that
has all options, and a single working area, where if you want to go back to the
"Preview scan" you just trigger another Preview scan.

These are just some ideas. I'm willing to discuss more on this if there is room
for this.
