The top/left corner of the preview is used because:

1/ Top/Right can show a text status when RAW files are loaded (as embedded
preview/ half size preview / full size preview / etc )
2/ Bottom / Right is used to show the rail way. There is a button between the
vertical and horizontal scrollbars.
3/ New in 9.0.0 : Bottom /Left show the image properties as with SlideShow.
It's customizable in Setup/Albums/View page.

As Maik said, the toolbar is voluntary transparent to render the image in the
background and to be not too intrusive (priority to the image).

I close this file now.
