A workaround is to attach the transparency mask to a fully opaque layer inside
the group, such as a a fill layer, then change that layer's blend mode to
"Destination In" which has the same effect as a clipping mask.

Group (Pass Through)
  Fill Layer or Vector Layer that is fully opaque in "Destination In" blend
mode
    Transparency mask
Group 2
  Layers to mask
Group 3, etc.
