Still happens in 5.4.1. The message list is maintained until the folder filter
string does not match the selected folder any more.
Example: select the folder "kde". The message list now displays messages from
the "kde" folder. Type "kdx" into the folder quicksearch field. The message
list is cleared when you hit the "x".
KMail still knows that "kde" was selected. In the above example, remove the "x"
from the quicksearch field, and "kde" is selected again. This restores the
message list, too.
Clearing the entire quicksearch field using Ctrl+Back, however, deselects the
original folder.
