This could be caused by Album Monitoring being enabled in the digiKam settings under Collections. This feature should only be used if you absolutely need to update albums based on external events while digiKam is running. Otherwise, problems occur under Windows if albums are open in other programs or if digiKam is still scanning the contents itself (file locking issue).
