Dolphin is an excellent file manager, but it currently lacks the ability to
group files by one criterion (e.g., Type) while sorting within groups by
another (e.g., Date Modified). This functionality is available in Windows
Explorer and greatly improves file navigation when managing diverse files.
Currently, enabling "Show in Groups" ties grouping to the primary sort order.
Clicking a column header changes both sort and group criteria, breaking the
desired view.
Please add support for independent grouping and sorting, allowing users to
group by Type while sorting by Date Modified within each group.
Or go further and add the ability to sort under multiple selected criteria and
rule sets.
(e.g., Sort by Modified + Group by Type + Size + Newest first + Priority of
sorting + Independent from, etc.)
This would make Dolphin even more powerful for users managing large or
mixed-content directories and further help Dolphin exceed the capabilities of
Windows Explorer (until Windows copies more KDE features again).
