Choosing the Services menu causes the current responder chain to be searched for objects that can provide or receive data of the types used by each service listed in the Services menu. If an object is found that can use a given service, the service’s menu item is shown in the menu. Menu items for which no suitable object is found are not shown in the menu." Check keyboard -> shortcuts -> services: and look for the entry "Open App". The menu items under <Application menu> -> services is mostly shared on all the apps afaik. I could not reproduce the crash/freeze from my system neither activate anything that could trigger the freeze.
