I don't think the second part, `intelligently determine the space needed based on what needs to be merged`, is feasible, but the first part is important, in my opinion. Nemo and Thunar do this today. We should be warning the user about the potential size issue, but we should also allow the user to `continue anyway`. That way, you can copy files from one directory to another if you know they have duplicates and you're going to skip or merge them anyway.
