I'd also like to view photospheres / equirectangular images.

On Linux, the only way I've found to view them is
https://www.fsoft.it/FSPViewer/ - which is free but not Open Source.

There's also https://pannellum.org/ - which is web / JS based.

I'm not sure if either of them can be easily integrated into DigiKam though.

Is there a way to set an external program as a viewer only for a specific type
of file?
