I'm going to close this report, because it's not actually a bug in kdenlive.

The problem is you've both burned in the subtitles at render time and are
rendering them in the player by virtue of having the external subtitle file
present and enabled.  And I'm not sure there's much we can do to catch
that for you, because both options are desirable for different user groups.

We might be able to document it, but really it's just one of those lessons
you need to learn about how all this works if you're working with subtitles.

Re "it would be good if the subs could have a transparent selectable background
color"
that's possible now with ASS format subtitles in recent releases.
