I am facing the same issue: Telepathy cannot connect to the ejabberd service.
It looks to me like the fallback to the PLAIN authentication method never takes
place. However, I am not competent enough to judge whether this error is in
ktp-auth-handler or gabble. Let me know if you need any debug output.
