I was logged into two different user sessions at the time, not sure if that makes a difference. It was the first time that I experienced this, however I had also recently occupied a new location with a different external monitor, so I wasn't sure if it's the code or the setup. (That said, my built-in laptop display was the one that I remember staying darker, not the monitor.) Changing the dimming percentage with kscreen-doctor for the affected display fixed the issue, unfortunately I didn't do any further sleuthing about why this may have happened. Sorry!
