Yes, the feature was never part of Dolphin. I kept using Konqueror in the KDE 4
days as long as I could but eventually it become difficult. 
2 of the more useful features of Konqueror was:
The ability to preview a document on the same window (and IIRC even in a new
tab). And I talk about proper preview, not just a thumbnail. 
The virtually infinite options for horizontal and vertical splitting. It was
quite common to use a T or an inverse T when I was splitting the window. 

10-15 years ago we got answers like "we have konqueror for this". Well, now we
don't, do we? 
And also, if Konqueror was the answer, then why move away from it? In terms of
user interaction, Konqueror offered superior to Dolphin options.

Anyway, the thing is that this feature seems very useful to a few people. There
was a patch already, so I guess the developers would not start from clean
sheet.
