Reading the previous comments, people got it working with different applications and different protocols, and it is not clear which issue you see. First, make sure the application actually supports the protocols (http:, ftp:, sftp:, smb: etc.) you feed to it. You can test it on the command line. Applications that use the KDE frameworks should support them. If not, please report this issue to the developers of the application.
