I was seeing this on my laptop with the Trash folder of a specific account, and
was *going to* try out the suggested solutions presented here, but then when I
switched that account to its own Trash folder once more it actually worked
without issue :-/ .  All I did was run ls -lh and tree on
~/.local/share/local-mail/ and ~/.local/share/akonadi_maildir_resource_0/ (and
some subdirectories).  So it seems there's an element of randomness and/or
non-determinism?

(As an aside: +1 on the "please rework Akonadi", or do *something*; for me it's
slowly reaching the point of death by a thousand paper cuts.)
