Maybe don't do that. :) 

In principle when there's an auto-hide panel on a screen edge, the pixels of
that screen edge are used to make it appear. Therefore anything else you put on
those pixels is going to be hard or impossible to reach.

I'm struggling to think of a way to improve this situation. At a certain point
I think you need to take responsibility for your own configuration of the
system, and not set it up in a way where different elements of it are
incompatible and interfere with one another.
