I always have the problem on my laptop when I change the resolution of an external screen connected to HDMI. But this time I don't have a display only on the external screen, the display configuration window greyed out in a loop every 5 seconds or so. Without removing the HDMI cable, I waited until the window was accessible to reset the external screen to its original resolution, so that it could be operational again.
