It looks like the lock screen now behaves the way you wish. I checked in Plasma
6.3.2 and git-master
1. Lock the screen
2. Turn the display off with ESC
3. Press Space
Result: The lock screen background displays. I need to press another key or
move the mouse to display the password field and enter anything.
