I think what you guys are talking about is a different issue and should thus be handled in another. My request was to have a option that makes sure that digikam would never write to an image file itself (i.e. neither changing exif, XMP or other meta-data *in* the image file, or doing things like transforming the image like lossless rotations in JPEG or so) but instead *only* write any meta-data updates to a sidecar file. The idea was, that the original image file should stay pristine as is, an any changes (like rotation information, tags, subsequently added geo information, etc. pp.) should go in a separate file.
