We always offload to the GPU, but that can still cost performance. With "prefer
efficiency", KWin is supposed to always offload to KMS, which has no
performance impact, but maybe that's not working correctly.
If you enable the "show compositing" desktop effect, does the red text
disappear when in fullscreen?
