This looks like it is intended behavior. It gives you the special character if
you enter a hex code or an alias that has been defined in the settings (System
Settings -> Plasma Search -> Special Characters -> Configure...).
I do agree with you that it's not super useful as it is. Maybe that's a feature
that could get implemented.
